Museums on the Front Page: The Met (Obama!), Natural History(New Theory of Evolution!), Intrepid (Fleet Week, with its sails trimmed)
The front page of the New York Times today has two stories on museums – Michelle Obama’s attendance at the re-opening of part of the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Then there’s the story on the over-the-top media hoopla being launched by the Museum of Natural History as it presents the discovery of a 47-million year old fossilthat researchers claim could change our understanding of evolution. A paragraph from the Times:
“Any pop band is doing the same thing,†said Jorn H. Hurum, a scientist at the University of Oslo who acquired the fossil and assembled the team of scientists that studied it. “Any athlete is doing the same thing. We have to start thinking the same way in science.â€
Tomorrow starts Fleet Week, with the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum – basically a big old war ship docked permanently in New York Harbor – back after two years of renovations, playing host to a parade of some 13 military vessels. According to WNYC, “the lineup is sparse, compared to past Fleet Week celebrations… the smallest contingent in Fleet Week’s 22 years.†How many warships do you need in the middle of Manhattan?
