Miss Saigon Comes To Denver

0

Well… “Miss Saigon” comes to the Arvada Center, actually. But “Miss Saigon Comes to Denver Area” sounds a little wishy-washy. And there’s nothing wishy-washy about this full-throated Broadway hit. Created by the same team who brought “Les Miserables” to the stage, Miss Saigon is a reworking of Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, and is the love story between a Marine and a Vietnamese girl during the Vietnam War, their parting, and eventual reunion. Some of the hit songs from the production include “Movie In My Mind”, “The Heat Is On In Saigon” and “Sun and Moon.”

Like the chandelier in “Phantom” the barricade in “Les Miz”, this show too has its big showcase number for the backstage crew in the form of a helicopter landing on the roof of the American embassy.

Some might also remember a little furor over the casting of Caucasian actors in Asian roles when the original “Miss Saigon” hit Broadway. It will be interesting to see how the Arvada Center handles this. Does color-blind casting extend to all theater, or just the classics (Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov, etc.)? Does “color-blind” extend to whites playing non-white roles?

Who knew musical theater could still push so many buttons?
