Wicked at the Buell

The smash-hit, Broadway musical Wicked will play the Buell Theater at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts October 7 through November 15.

The play is based on “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, the best-selling book by Gregory Maguire. It tells the story of “The Wizard of Oz” from the point of view of the witches, notably the future Wicked Witch, Elphaba. Her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North forms the backbone of the plot.

In “Wicked”, the witches start out as friends and then struggle to remain so through their opposing personalities, love for the same person, and the way they deal with the Wizard’s corrupt government. All of this takes place before Dorothy’s visit but includes several references to the 1939 film.

While the story is subversive, this is big, broad, family fare with lots of special effects and impressive solos. If you are a devotee of musicals, you already know about “Wicked.” If not, then check out the “real story” of the green-faced witch and the origins of the characters from “The Wizard of Oz.”
