If you decide to check out 90 Miles, the neighborhood Cuban café we mentioned earlier, then we’ve found the perfect place in the same hood to enjoy a post food cocktail. If you haven’t checked out the Logan Square hot spot The Whistler yet, then you’ve been missing out on some quality cocktails, free music and readings, and a killer patio space to sip a libation or two with friends.

Since setting up shop, The Whistler’s been offering up a bevy of rotating cocktails, crafted of premium ingredients and made by some of the best staff around. The cozy spot has obviously gained comparisons to The Violet Hour, as they too strive to bring back the art of making a fine cocktail.

I’ve sampled some of the current menu, and I’d highly recommend both the Lark Creek and Sibling Rivalry as my standout favorites. The Lark Creek consist of house-infused tequila with pineapple, Serrano peppers, and tarragon, a complex blend of flavors that houses a spicy kick as it goes down. The Sibling Rivalry is made of a house-infused pisco with lemongrass and ginger, apricot liqueur, egg whites and bitters. Pisco is a grape brandy from Peru and Chili, the apricot complements the lemongrass and ginger perfectly, and the addition of egg whites creates a light and frothy body to the cocktail, creating one of the best cocktails I’ve enjoyed in recent years.

Besides the outstanding drinks, The Whistler also has a rotating list of readings and bands performing throughout the week. And with no cover at the door, there is no excuse not to check out what is going on any given night at The Whistler. One ongoing event is the Orange Alert Reading Series, an extension of the arts and culture website What to Wear During an Orange Alert, where top poets and fiction writers in the Midwest come to share their work. Another favorite night of mine is whenever CHIRP (Chicago Independent Radio Project) takes over the decks to DJ, while welcoming local acts to the stage. This week (August 17th) they’ll welcome local lo-fi hip-hop artist Radius and Word and Number.

The Whistler is located at 2421 N. Milwaukee Ave in Logan Square. They are 21+ and there is no cover. The bar stays open until 2am (3am on Saturday), but the outdoor patio closes at 11pm (12am on Saturday), so head over early to enjoy a drink on the patio before heading inside for the rest of the evening.
