Poor Consuelo Conquers The World — Soap Operas effecting social change

consuelo Soap operas don’t just titillate — some change the world. Forty years ago, a soap opera in Peru (where they are called telenovelas) showed a character rising above poverty by becoming a seamstress. Suddenly throughout the country, sales of sewing machines skyrocketed. This inspired Mexican director Miguel Sabido to create a new form of “Education-Entertainment” that, for example, has lowered birthrates in whole countries.

A new documentary that describes this phenomenon, Poor Consuelo Conquers The World, funded by the Sundance Institute, will be one of the many films screened as part of Independent Film Week, this one at the Fashion Institute of Technology (7th Avenue and 27th Street) on Tuesday, September 22nd at 4 p.m.
