Drag Queens and Death Disco: Halloween 2009 in Washington, DC

Though the the Silver Spring Zombie Walk arrives a few days earlier, tradition holds that Halloween in the District officially kicks with a decidedly Dupont version of Spain’s Running of the Bulls: the DC Drag Queen Race. Truly an event where trick or treating takes on new connotations, genderbenders of all persuasions come out to showcase their intricately constructed costumes…and then run the length of 17th Street in them. The crowd for this spectacle, which this year falls on Tuesday, October 27th, often numbers in the thousands and gives way to a street festival after the last stiletto has crossed the finish line.

NOLZThe National Zoo, itselfno stranger to adults only events, is up next with Night of the Living Zoo on Friday, October 30th. With intoxicants supplied exclusively by the Magic Hat Brewing Company, the Zoo is hosting their own after hours costume party that promises “palm readers, fire eaters, talking bats, and illusionists,” as well as live music from jazz funk trio, Soulive and a few special guests. Tickets are available through the Zoo’s website here.

razzCome All Hallows’ Eve proper, while Adams Morgan and U Street are are inundated costumed revelers, the nearby Black Cat will be observing the holiday with a special Halloween edition of their britpop-centric Razzmatazz dance party. Expect multiple spins of Pulp‘s “Death Goes to the Disco” and lots of Sixiousie & the Banshees worship from DJs ReddAJ and William Alberque. Get more info on Razzmatazz through Facebook.

Meanwhile, for those that prefer pyrotechnics over eyeliner when it comes to Halloween , the stars of Adult Swim‘s “Metalocalypse,” the cartoon band Dethklok, will be taking over the Patriot Center on October 31st as well. The “band” — which for in-person is headed up by the show’s creator and songwriter, Brendon Smallheadlines a formidable line-up of heavily tattooed, bearded and all together super-serious metal acts: Mastodon, Converge and High on Fire. With a dance card like that for an arena show, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Satan himself shotgunning a Natty Light in the parking lot.
