It’s the day after Thanksgiving. Chances are you are probably still sleepy from the turkey and stuffing overload the day before, and unless your idea of bliss is scoring a deal while shopping at 3am, then you probably have no plans for the day.
Head out to one of these great events on “Black Friday” that are fun for the whole family, and we promise you won’t end the day wrestling an old lady for the last deal of the day while stuck shopping.
Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza
Head downtown to the annual German market that pops up every holiday season in Daley Plaza. Enjoy shopping for handcrafted wares from around the world (a large portion from Germany, obviously), grab a cup of spiced wine, and ooh and aww at the huge tree decorated in the plaza. The market is open from 11am to 8pm, and is totally free to browse and enter. It will be open until Christmas Eve, but Chicago weather is sure to get frigid soon, so enjoy the outdoor market tomorrow during your holiday Friday off.
The Lincoln Park Zoo will remain open late during the holiday season, so patrons can come stroll around and enjoy the holiday light directions that open up this weekend. They’ll be light decorations, ice sculptures, and many other special activities during the event. The lights start up around 5pm, and the event goes until 9pm. Another bonus is it’s free as well!
The Sound of Music sing-a-long at Music Box
If I was going to choose the best way to spend Friday night of the holiday weekend, my money would be on The Sound of Music sing-a-long at the Music Box. The Thanksgiving weekend tradition continues with four showings of the movie, including a 7pm on “Black Friday.” Come ready to sing along (subtitles provided), use props during the movie, and if you dress up in costume, you’ll be invited up to the stage for the fancy-dress competition. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of. It’s not every weekend you get the option to sing with Julie Andrews, so choose wisely.
