Timothy Haskell grew up with two obsessions – acting in his school plays and watching martial arts movies. Now as a director and theatrical impresario, he has found a way to combine the two in a new theater festival he helped dreamed up, Fight Fest, which will be presenting “Ninja Cherry Orchard” and other such bizarre mash-ups throughout the month of December at the Brick Theater in Brooklyn, the same people who brought you “The Kung Fu Importance of Being Earnest” and “Macbeth Without Words.”
“I have always said that too many people would rather see a bad action movie than a good play,” Haskell says, “and this festival can change that.”
The requirements were simple for the eight “mainstage” shows in the festival: at least 25 percent of each show has to be stage combat. What goes in-between varies. Some are musicals; Haskell has coined the term fightsicals. Some are classic plays. One is described as an “improvised sitcom.” Most seem exercises in the surreal, ranging in length from 35 to 90 minutes. To Haskell they have one trait in common: “These are the kinds of plays i would have wanted to be in as a kid in if they had existed.”
