Christmakwanzakah season is upon us once again and between the U Street Corridor‘s lively cadre of boutique retailers and after hours hot spots, there are more than enough excuses to cross all of those must-have items off in the District’s hottest zip code. Sweeter still, three neighborhood institutions are folding U Street’s two greatest strengths — shopping and nightlife — into one for this year’s holiday get-togethers.
Appropriately enough, the U Street Neighborhood Association will be kicking off the season with their Annual Holiday Party and Silent Auction at the posh 8th St. “danceboutique” Town on Thurs. Dec. 10th. With original clothing and artwork, concert passes and more up on the block from local staples like the 9:30 Club, Marvin and Vinoteca, feel free to spoil a loved…or just yourself. Admission is free and the auction begins at 7 pm. Find out more on Facebook.
The following week, the fair trade/high style amalgamists at Go Mama Go! will be turning their 14th St. storefront into an art gallery as they host the work of more than 50 different artists from the Touchstone and Foundry galleries from Fri. Dec. 11th – Sun. Dec. 13th. The opening reception will only run from 6 pm – 8 pm on the day of the exhibition’s debut, but the 10% off sale on all Go Mama Go! stock lasts all weekend.
Those who prefer their art hard, fast and loud, however, with may want to save their spending cash for The Black Cat‘s ROCK-N-SHOP on Sat. Dec. 19th. Billed as a “rock and roll garage sale,” the club’s main stage will be transformed into an Antiques Roadshow for audiophiles as make way for booths from area record stores, t-shirt peddlers and curio dealers set up shop on the dance floor. The sale begins at 8 pm and is free.
