Dill Pickle Food Co-op Opens in Logan Square
Many major cities across the country have seen a rise in popularity and embraced the idea of food co-ops. Yet Chicago hasn’t jumped on this bandwagon. This is a surprising fact given the popularity of eating local, and the vibrant thriving local food community in our city. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, and a local grocer ran by the people for the people makes perfect sense. Chicago will finally test the waters with the recent opening of the Dill Pickle Co-op in Logan Square.
So how does the Dill Pickle Co-op work? According to their site, they are a “cooperatively owned and governed neighborhood grocery store that aims to provide sustainable, local, and organic goods at an affordable price,” and is “an independent, democratic organization that is owned, operated, and financed by its members.” That means that the store isn’t owned by a chain or outside source, but is owned by it’s members, and anyone can join for a fee.
This doesn’t mean you have to join to shop at the co-op though. But becoming a member gives you perks, like voting and choosing the products sold, membership discounts, eligible for patronage rebate, lower your carbon footprint, all while supporting a local community driven business.
Anyone over the age of 18 can become a member of the co-op. The cost of a membership is $250, which can be paid at once or over a 5 year period with an minimum annual payment of $50. If you choose to terminate your membership, you can redeem your shares in full at any time when funds are available. They also have low income options as well.
Given the wonderful food driven community in Chicago, and the vibrant Logan Square neighborhood, the Dill Pickle Co-op is the perfect setting to not only support local projects and vendors, but also meet other individuals and strengthen the community you live in. Stop by the store, check it out, and support your local businesses in Chicago.
The Dill Pickle Food Co-op is located at 3039 W. Fullerton. They are open 7 days a week from noon to 8pm. Check out their website for events, to become a member, and for other information.
