All January 7th at The First Unitarian Church

From R5 Productions Website:

All
When renowned (and often copied) Los Angeles punk rockers the Descendents were forced to go on hiatus in the late ’80s when singer Milo Aukerman left the group to attend college full time, the remaining members decided to carry on under a different name: ALL (lifted from the title of the Descendents’ final 1987 studio recording). Former Descendents members Bill Stevenson (drums), Stephen Egerton (guitar), and Karl Alvarez (bass) were all in attendance w/ vocalist Scott Reynolds. The Reynolds-led version of ALL issued four albums overall: 1989’s Allroy’s Revenge, 1990’s Trailblazer: Live and Allroy Saves, and 1992’s Percolator. First east coats shows with Scott in YEARS !

Off With Their Heads
Minneapolis strikes again! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS play snotty pop punk that sounds a whole lot like Dillinger4. In fact sometimes Patty plays with them. No Idea Records.

Shot Baker
No ‘post’ this or that, no pretense, nothing arty, no sappy emo, no indie-rock, no hybrid anything. It’s an honest formula: music that rocks + punk aggressiveness. Chicago

Deep Sleep
Melodic ALL / DESCENDENTS influenced brand of punk rock from Baltimore. Grave Mistake Records

Kurt Vile January 8th at Johnny Brenda’s

Kurt Vile

KV’s mad lo-fi brilliance has finally found a home with Matador Records. After putting out a series of home recorded CD-Rs, choice tracks were compiled onto the Constant Hitmaker album put out by Gulcher Records. This started a flurry of national attention resulting in this: his multi-record deal with Matador!

Strapping Fieldhands

The Strapping Fieldhands were born in the basements and bedrooms of Philadelphia over ten years ago when they began taping their loose jam sessions on home recording equipment, with no other goal than to play around with some sounds among friends and just tape some weird crap to amuse themselves. Bob Malloy had some songs, Bob Dickie had a home studio, Jacy Webster had to be there. A band was begun. Their earliest efforts became the first Strapping Fieldhands 7″ single that was originally meant to be a one-off on Siltbreeze, but the immediate interest generated sparked a series of vinyl singles now collected on the CD Gobs on the Midway. Their first ever live gig was in Fishtown!!!

Home Blitz

Super-primitive, homemade indie garage with some screwy chops & time signatures, sort of like bedroom college savant music from a punk modeling himself on “tasty fuckin’ lickmeisters” of the prog era. Princeton, NJ. Songs jump between garage-y romp and impenetrable wall of noise, like a kid running through a candy store. You’re either going to hate this because you’ll see it as an overwhelmingly long narcissistic gaze into the mirror of scuzzy punk nostalgia; or you’re gonna love it because it lacks any/all revelatory aspirations and goes straight for the jugular of intensely stupid fun. From Princeton.

Julian Casablancas January 10th at The Trocadero Theatre

Julian Casablancas’ vocals feature a distinct delivery as well as a wide range in pitch. His signature vocal style combines elements of sing-speak and soul, drawing influences most notably from Robert Pollard, Lou Reed.

As The Strokes principal songwriter, he has the greatest impact on their sound and has been known to be extremely meticulous with it. While Casablancas composes on a variety of instruments, he uses the keyboard to write complex arrangements that he later transposes to fit The Strokes’ guitar-driven lineup.

Another recent change has come in the recording of his vocals, which is significantly clearer and louder than on their first two albums. On The Strokes’ first two albums, Casablancas would always use a filter when singing. He changed this on First Impressions of Earth. Casablancas says this was adjusted only because it fit the new songs’ styles more, and not because he was any less critical about his voice.

On 18th September, UK fans got their first taste of a full song from the album, as Zane Lowe played the track “11th Dimension” on an evening show. It was then later revealed that this would be the first single from Phrazes for the Young, released on November 2 in the UK and November 3, 2009, in the US. Recorded in Los Angeles, Nebraska and Casablancas’ home city New York, the album was produced by Jason Lader, with additional production from Bright Eyes’ Mike Mogis.

Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven January 13th at World Cafe Live

Cracker

Cracker, the group that veritably introduced brash irreverence and irony into alt-rock, are back and in top form on their 429 Records debut, Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey. This rich new trove of sharp-witted songs showcases a bristling, late 70’s – early 80’s power pop punk aesthetic which hits as hard as it did at the band’s formation 17 years ago. Eight albums (one platinum and three gold) and a barrel full of anthemic hit songs later, Cracker endures, using their ability to weave decades of influences into an album that is seamlessly riveting.

Camper Van Beethoven

This past year marked not only the 25th anniversary of the influential rock band Camper Van Beethoven, but also, in many ways, indie music itself – a genre that this Santa Cruz-based band unwittingly (or perhaps wittingly) helped spearhead in the early ’80s long before the terms alternative or indie became common hyphen fodder for the word ‘rock.’

Anvil January 17th at Theatre of Living Arts

The story of ANVIL goes back to the early roots of Heavy Metal. ANVIL was a true pioneer of this genre of music beginning their career in the late 70’s. They began recording albums in 1981 with their debut album called Hard and Heavy. It was well received in England where they ended up playing some of the worlds most revered rock festivals, The Monsters of Rock and Reading Festivals. The band recorded two albums with producer Chris Tsangarides called Metal on Metal and Forged in Fire, which remain as classic albums to this day. The band went on to tour with Motorhead in the United Kingdom. ANVIL also played in Japan as a headliner in 1983 and then on a massive festival circuit with Michael Shenker Group, Scorpions, Whitesnake and Bon Jovi in 1984 at the Super Rock festival series. This was the first festivals of this type ever held in Japan. ANVIL has continued working very hard producing albums on a regular basis and has never given up their dream. They have recorded 13 studio albums to date and are currently looking for distribution for the newest cd appropriately titled This is Thirteen. The album was recorded in England with producer Chris Tsangarides and truly ventures back with a vengeance to the classic ANVIL sound. In recent years ANVIL has been fortunate enough to get evolved with a very special friend Sacha Gervasi who is currently directing and executively producing a docudrama about the bands real life history in real time. There is incredible footage of actual experiences touring and recording in the past 2 years. Sacha is known for his great work with Steven Spielberg on the movie Terminal, staring Tom Hanks. The ANVIL movie debuted at the prestigious Sundance Festival in January 2008. People love this band when they learn about their incredible tenacity and dedication to their music. It comes out in the live performance so intensely it is a truly overwhelming experience. Something not to be overlooked or missed.

Asobi Seksu (Acoustic Show) January 28th at The First Unitarian Church’s Chapel

From Wikipedia:

Asobi Seksu is an American Dream Pop band based in New York City. Their music draws influence from the shoegazing genre as well, and similarly uses a textured and effects-heavy vocal and guitar sound. The band consists of Yuki Chikudate (vocals, keyboards) and James Hanna (guitar, vocals).

They were originally known as Sportfuck, and in 2001 released their first self-titled EP. Finding the name juvenile, the band soon changed their name to Asobi Seksu. Their full length debut followed in 2004. They regrouped with a new rhythm section for their second album, Citrus, which was recorded in Gigantic Studios, New York City, with producer Chris Zane and Released in 2006 by Friendly Fire.

One Little Indian Records re-released the band’s first album Asobi Seksu and the follow-up Citrus in 2007.

Asobi Seksu was featured in the fifth episode of the fifth season of the American hit television show The L Word, and the first episode of the third season of the British television series Skins. The song “Layers” from the album Hush was also featured in an episode of Ugly Betty and in the trailer for So Yong Kim’s film “Treeless Mountain”

In May, 2009, Yuki Chikudate released a single with Pocket called “Sampo.” The track included remixes by Mux Mool, Blue Eyes and Craig Wedren.

Between the Buried and Me’s general musical style has been stated by criticts to be primarily a blend of metalcore, progressive metal and even at times death metal, along with them incorporating many different musical styles: “One minute the band may be playing thrash metal and the next they’re flowing into death metal growls and thick guitar riffs… the metal take on things can seemingly change in a flash as lead singer Tommy Rogers fleshes out his vocals and utilizes the keyboards to create something that sounds more like it should be on a Smashing Pumpkins album”. On their covers album, The Anatomy Of, the band pays tribute to many of their diverse influences, including King Crimson, Soundgarden, Pantera, Pink Floyd, Earth Crisis, and Smashing Pumpkins.

In early 2010, Between the Buried and Me will be touring across the US with Cynic, Devin Townsend, and Scale the Summit. Afterwards, they will conquer Europe supporting Lamb of God, along with Job for a Cowboy and August Burns Red.
