A new year, the year of the Tiger in the Chinese Zodiac, starts on Feburary 14, 2010, and a fitting celebration will be held on New Year’s Eve. There will also be a celebration for Vietnamese New Year (Tet) as well as other Lunar New Year celebrations around the city and region.

Tet in Seattle will be held at the Seattle Center on Saturday February 6th and Sunday, February 7th. The festivities start at 11 am on Saturday with a Lion Dance and opening ceremony and run until 6 pm each night. The theme for this year’s festival is “Splendor of Regions of Vietnam” and music, dance, cooking and children’s activities will be prominently featured. The festival is free and will be held in the Center House and Fisher Pavilion.

The Chinatown/International District throws a large celebration every year for Lunar New Year, and this year’s falls on Saturday, February 13th – New Year’s Eve. From 11 am to 4 pm in Hing Hay Park you’ll find a lion and dragon dance, drill teams from the Chinese and Filipino communities, Japanese taiko drumming, children’s activities, including a parade, martial arts and a scavenger hunt. The celebration is free and Hing Hay Park is located at 411 Maynard Ave South.

If you’re on the Eastside and don’t want to drive to Seattle, you’re in luck. The Seattle Chinese Times and the Tulalip Resort Casino are sponsoring a Lunar New Year Celebration at the Factoria Mall in Bellevue on February 6th and 7th from 11 am to 6 pm each day. There will be performances, games, booths and more and the event is free. Factoria Mall is located at 4055 Factoria Mall SE.
