The 1st annual Roots Picnic saw The Roots put an epic lineup together that featured the likes of Santigold, Diplo, Deerhoof, and Gnarls Barkley. Last years 2nd Annual event saw the Philly group perform 2 sets while jamming alongside the likes of The Black Keys, TV on The Radio; and legendary rappers Public Enemy, who performed their entire album “It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back” while backed by Antibalas and The Roots. But if the mega video that Roots Drummer ?uestlove unleashed today is any indication, it looks like the band is ready to top it with their 3rd Annual picnic.
While backstage during the one year anniversary of Jimmy Kimmel Live, the show in which the Roots provide the backing music for, ?uestlove dropped the video which aired some pretty big bombshells! The picnic has been known to mix a variety of genres before; and with big name alternative acts like Vampire Weekend playing the same bill as hip-hop heavyweights like The Clipse, the 2010 lineup will be no exception! Along with those two big name acts; the lineup will feature. The Very Best, Mayer Hawthorne, Das Racist, Tune-Yards, Nneka, Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew, Pattern Is Movement, and The Money Making Jam Boys. ?uestlove will also be working the turntables alongside the Legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff. But the biggest announcement of the lineup is by far the fact that Run DMC will be reuniting and performing classic songs with the Roots. No word yet on who is going to fill the huge shoes of the late Jam Master Jay — not that anybody really could — but when we hear more details we will surely let you know.
Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 5th via Livenation.com at 10am. This June 5th, the legendary Roots will bring themselves and a bunch of their fellow musicians/friends to Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the third annual Roots Picnic. Between now then there may be even more announcements. But with the lineup above this already looks to be epic!
