The 2010 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is Coming on May 9th

Philadelphia’s Race for the Cure is coming up Sunday, May 9th. The race, which starts at 7 am sharp on Mother’s Day, is one of the key fundraisers for the organization. Online registration ends on May 3, so hurry if interested.

The Race is a 5k (3.1 miles) course you can run or walk. There is a 1 mile walk option as well. Whether you aim to compete as an official prize contender,or just watch and partake in the festivities, there will be plenty of opportunities to give towards the cause. There’s even a special car raffle for a 2010 Ford Mustang convertible. Racers will meet at the Eakins Oval portion of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Several years ago, thanks to money raised through the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure, the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate introduced a series of innovative outreach programs designed to break through barriers associated with certain cultural traditions and other factors of ethnicity.

Each of these free events attracts more than 1,000 women annually:

* Sisters for the Cure African-American Outreach: December 11, 2010
* Latinas United for the Cure: March 6, 2010
* Asian-American Outreach Event: June 5, 2010

Having established the groundwork though these three Philadelphia-based events, they now offer similar programs in other counties, and for groups such Jewish, Arabic and lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered communities. Last year, the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate distributed more than $2.1 million in grants to thirty-eight organizations in their thirteen-county service area to support breast cancer outreach programs.

Shirts will be displayed at all Race weekend events, allowing everyone to make a donation for their favorite design. To enter, attach a small card to the shirt label with your name, team name, email address, and phone where you can be reached on Race Day.
