We love our dogs in the Pacific Northwest. We also love the great outdoors. We just don’t always know the best place to take our furry friends when we want to go on a hike. With the Cascade Mountains less than an hour away, and the Olympics just a ferry ride away, we know the opportunities are out there. On Thursday, April 28th, Dan Nelson will give a presentation on Best Hikes With Dogs from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at the Seattle REI store. Register on the website.

“Dan and his canine partner, Sophie, will discuss how to enjoy safe, responsible hikes with dogs. Dan and Sophie will briefly cover canine gear issues, first aid, and fitness training. They will then present a slide show on some of their favorite hikes in the Cascades and Olympics, followed by a Q&A session with attendees.”

The book that is already a family hiking classic, Best Hikes with Kids: Western Washington and the Cascades, was written by Joan Burton in 2006. The author will be at the Seattle REI flagship store on Saturday, May 8th from 11 am to 11:45 am to “discuss the goals and challenges of hiking with kids, share her favorite day hikes with kids and leave you with a better understanding of the positive impacts you will have on a child’s life by introducing them to nature.” No registration is required for the Hiking as a Family workshop.

If you’re considering hiking with your family or friends, but don’t know where and how to start, there will be a Hiking Basics Panel just after the Hiking as a Family presentation.

From 12 pm to 1 pm on Saturday, May 8th, you can “Ask your burning questions to our panel of hiking experts, including REI gear experts and hiking guide author Craig Romano. Learn hiking basics, what gear you need, how to plan a hike, and great places to start hiking.” No registration is required.

All of the events are free and all will be held at the REI flagship store located at 222 Yale Avenue North.
