Country singers Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton announced their engagement today. Shelton proposed on May 9th after a call to Miranda’s father. “He called my dad and got his blessing first,” Lambert told People Magazine. “That was so Southern and old-school and perfect.”

Shelton, 33, and Lambert, 26 have been together for five years, and 2010 has been a great year for them both professionally. In January Lambert earned her first number one single with “White Liar,” and shortly afterward won both Album of the Year and Top Female Vocalist at the ACM Awards. This morning both Lambert and Shelton were nominated for CMT awards.

Even with so much success happening for them professionally, the proposal was definitely casual and indicative of the singers’ personalities. It took place in the woods near Lambert’s Oklahoma home, and to celebrate Lambert says, “”We had a couple of Bacardi and Diet Sprites – in a Solo cup!”

“2010 will not be forgotten in my world,” Lambert said.
