The SoLow Arts Festival, running May 13-23, looks like a great way to catch some new and experimental art, without spending a lot of cash. I always love these types of events both because the diversity of what’s available and the grassroots passion that the artists bring to the endeavor. It’s generally a true labor of love, but at the same time the talent level can be surprisingly high.
In this case, if you’re a fan of NerdCore, you won’t want to miss Nerdrage Philadelphia, the first nerdcore/hip hop showcase in Philly, which will be May 21 at 7 pm. Nerdrage will have nerdcore hip/hop artists from all over coming to perform, including MC Frontalot, who is called the “godfather” of the sub genre. MC Frontalot is in the middle of a tour, and Philadelphia will be his last U.S. stop before heading off to the UK in June.
In the spirit of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, SoLow offers a grass-roots, raw feel with a focus on original and solo performances. You can see several original solo pieces, new play readings, productions of new works, improv, and musical ventures. Best of all, it’s all pay what you can.
There are no application or marketing fees and no screening process for the festival, which has no umbrella organization, so 100% of revenue goes immediately back to the artists.
SoLow will feature work from many up-and-coming artists including Nicholas Allin, Corey Bechelli, Jean Brooks, Patrick Bussink, Katy Chevigny, Thomas Choinacky, Carla Emanuele, Frederick Tenuto Company, Amanda Grove, Andrea Kuhar, Cora Leighton, Aubrie Williams, Meghann Williams, and Lauren Zapata.
The festival is centrally located at Underground Arts at the Wolf Building in Center City but will also include non-traditional venues throughout the city.
Here’s the official video of MC Frontalot’s “Bizarro Genius Baby.”
