The World Steam Expo – A Michigan Steampunk Convention
If you’re searching for a non-traditional way to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend 2010, look no further than The World Steam Expo, a Michigan steampunk convention. The World Steam Expo is being held May 28 – 31, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn in Dearborn, Michigan. (Dearborn is a suburb of Detroit and public transit can get you there.)
The guest list for the 2010 World Steam Expo includes one of the most popular steampunk musical acts in the United States: Abney Park. They will be signing autographs at 8:00 p.m. on Friday of the convention. On Saturday night they will be performing along with the Bawdy Boys, and Tartanic. The show starts at 6:30 p.m.
Other guests include Amy Williamson, Evelyn Kriete, Extraordinary Contraptions, G.D. Falksen, Imperial Anti-Piracy Squadron, Miss Monster, Outland Armour, Penny Dreadful Productions, Phil and Kaja Foglio, Terrance Zdunich, The Gypsy Nomads, The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing, The Squidling Brothers, and The Vagabonds.
When not offering concerts from steampunk bands, The World Steam Expo has packed their schedule full of panel discussions, contests, and other events. Where else will you get to experience a Mad Science Fair, a Tiny Top Hat Workshop, or a discussion about the intricacies of “The Bustle” (an essential element in ladies Victorian fashion)? Some of the other steampunk panel discussions include “Putting The ‘Punk’ In Steampunk,” “Steampunk Archetypes,” and “Steampunking the Home.”
If sitting in a room discussing steampunk isn’t up your alley, there are plenty of other activities that will no doubt keep you entertained. On Saturday you can take Victorian dance lessons beginning at noon. If you’re more interested in gaming, The World Steam Expo has several sessions running for all four days of the con, with everything from the not-at-all steampunk Killer Bunnies card game, to a steampunk version of the popular board game FRAG. There are also several viewing rooms at The World Steam Expo, showing all manner of Victorian and steampunk inspired movies, television shows, and anime.
