FOUR Nights of FREE Shows in Austin
The Live Music Capital of the World always has plenty of shows to choose from any night of the week, and sometimes it is nice to check out someone new, especially when you can do so for the price of free. Here are some shows that I can personally recommend for a good time and a low price.
Wednesday, June 9th: Reckless Kelly at Hill’s Cafe
Each Wednesday throughout the spring and summer Hill’s Cafe puts on its Free Texas Country Music Series on the back patio under huge oak trees. If you’ve never checked out an alt-country/Texas country concert, Reckless Kelly is definitely one to see – they always put on a high energy show and have one great song after another. Check out some of their hits such as “Wicked Twisted Road” and “Seven Nights in Ireland,” Doors open at 6PM – get there early to see Sons of Bill at 7PM and catch Reckless Kelly at 8PM. The show lasts until 10PM and all ages are welcome.
Thursday, June 10th: Dum Dum and the Smarties, Soft Talk Radio, and Michael Griffin at Ruta Maya
Ruta Maya always has low cover/no cover shows going on and all ages are welcome. Enjoy some of their famous coffee and drink specials while listening to three awesome bands from 8PM-11PM. Although I can only personally attest to Soft Talk Radio’s awesomeness, I’m looking forward to checking out the other bands, and I’m sure they will all put on a great show. Get more information on Ruta Maya’s site or visits the bands’ pages at: Dum Dum and the Smarties, Soft Talk Radio, and Michael Griffin.
June 10th-June 12th: Republic of Texas Biker Rally in Austin
It may not technically be a live show, but if you’ve ever been downtown during the ROT Rally you’ll probably agree that it’s close enough. There will be all kinds of shows and events surrounding the rally this weekend, and even more interesting people to meet. Some venues known for housing bikers during ROT weekend: Twin Peaks, 701 E. Stassney; Mister Tramps, 8565 Research; Verdes Mexican Parrilla, 16018 Hamilton Pool Rd.; The Rock Saloon, 1113 RR 620 N.; Nutty Brown Cafe & Amphitheatre, 12225 Hwy. 290 W.; Coyote Ugly Saloon, 501 E. Sixth; Aces Lounge, 222 E. Sixth; Weirdos, 12408 MoPac N. If you are interested in official ROT Rally events visit their site at www.rotrally.com.
Saturday, June 12th: Shawn Nelson at the Mean Eyed Cat
I love the Mean Eyed Cat, and saw Shawn Nelson play by chance while at the venue with a friend. I became a fan very quickly. The Johnny Cash themed bar is decked out in man-in-black memorabilia, and has a cool covered patio/room with picnic tables where bands play. Shawn Nelson and his band put on a great country show with originals as well as covers from everyone to Waylon Jennings to Old Crow Medicine Show. Check them out at Nelson’s website, and for more info on the Mean Eyed Cat visit their site here. Show is from 9PM to 12AM.
