Opening this Friday, June 11th, the Midwives Collective Annual Members Show proves to be both an eclectic and emotional presentation. REDefined features the work of seven very different artists as they relate to the theme of ‘red’ and the mood and passion it provokes. Expect to see installation, painting, sumi, textile, and photography at this show!
The artists used this opportunity to challenge themselves in their various craft as well as working together to create a Redwork Quilt. This piece, inspired by traditional 19th century redwork quiltmaking, is composed of unique squares, each stitched by a collective member. It will be raffled to raise funds for Midwives for Haiti, a non-profit organization sending nurses to aid pregnant Haitian women. A portion of all art sales will also be donated to the cause.
The Midwives Collective is a community of women with the goal of fostering art and culture. Their welcoming and unusual gallery space is located in South Philly at 1241 Carpenter. The opening reception runs from 6-10pm. REDefined can also be viewed during regular gallery hours every Saturday from noon-5pm until July 10th.
Featured artists include Ellen Bonett, Kelly A. Burkhardt, Carol Deutsch, Sarah Louise Hunt, Christiana Kugel, Cheryl Rybacki, and Elizabeth J. Smith.
