Cupcakes are seeing quite the resurgence in popularity these days, especially in Philadelphia. One of the most heated arguments you can get into in this city (aside from the Eagles vs the Dallas Cowboys) is which Philadelphia eatery has the best cupcakes. Since I haven’t sampled every cupcake in the city, I don’t feel comfortable making claims on the absolute best, but I will tell you about one of my personal favorites: Buttercream!
Buttercream is the name of the company that operates Philadelphia’s first (and only) cupcake truck. That’s right. You get cupcakes from a delivery truck, just like you would ice cream. I know, it’s crazy awesome. Let that sink in for a moment. A Cupcake. Delivery. Truck.
Buttercream specializes in, you guessed it, buttercream frosting (although they also do ganache).
Some of the amazing cupcake flavors include:
- Banana Cake with Nutella Buttercream
- Yellow or Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Buttercream
- Yellow or Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ganache
- Yellow or Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Buttercream
- Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
- …along with some seasonal items as well
I’ve actually sampled almost all of the flavors personally at this point, and would like to throw a hearty endorsement to the Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting and Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Buttercream flavors. All of them are delicious, but those two are divine.
Buttercream’s truck can be found at various locations throughout Philadelphia. Every week a schedule is posted to the Buttercream website. Loyal cupcake devotees can also find location updates via Buttercream’s Twitter feed. Some of the typical stops include Old City, Temple University, 20th and Arch, University City, and many others. I just learned today that for the rest of the summer, the cupcake truck will be stopping in Old City near the Arden Theater (that’s 2nd and Cuthbert) on Tuesdays. Be sure to check the website for other locations.
In addition to the truck stops, Buttercream can also do special events and orders. You can e-mail them at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss custom orders, deliveries, events, etc.
You owe it to your inner child to go flag down the cupcake delivery truck, and get a little taste of the heavenly Buttercream cupcakes. Don’t worry, we won’t judge. We’ll be in line right behind you.
