“Red,” “La Cage Aux Folles,” “Fences,” and “Memphis” were the big winners of the 64th annual Tony Awards. Unlike previous Tonys, though, no one show dominated. If you had to find a theme for the evening, it was: Movie stars will triumph. Among those winning Tonys were Denzel Washington, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and, in her Broadway debut, Scarlett Johansson.

The broadcast itself seemed to showcase more movie, TV and even rock stars than it did those known primarily from the stage.

“Red,” about painter Mark Rothko won the Tony for best play and had the largest number of Tony Awards, at six. “Fences” won for best revival of a play, and its two stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis won for best lead actor and actress.
