Father’s Day around the Bay Area
Well, Father’s Day weekend is here and the fun starts early.Â Here are a few choices to get your weekend kicked off right.Â
On Saturday we have the 44th Annual Sand Castle Contest on Alameda’s Crown Memorial Beach.Â http://www.ci.alameda.ca.us/arpd/pdf/sand_castle_and_sculpture_flyer.pdfÂ A fun and FREE event for all ages starting at 9 am.Â Bring your own buckets and shovels, pack a picnic and spend the day at the beach.Â The kite surfers are abundant, a nice flat bike path is ready to rideÂ and a cool breeze is waiting for you at this popular east bay beach.Â Parking is $5 a vehicle or side street parking is abundant.Â Word to the wise…stick to the bathrooms on the bike path.Â The parking lot bathrooms leave A LOT to be desired.
Vertical Challenge at the San Carlos airport is sure to be a hit among fathers and sons alike.Â Showcasing helicopter skills and functions there is something for everyone.Â Parachute jumps and demonstrations along with airshows are sure to keep you busy for the day.Â Parking for this event is available at the airport with free shuttles running to event site.Â Tickets are $20 for adults, youth and seniors $10 and children under 4 are free.Â Tickets are available online to print at home.Â Bring your sunscreen as helicopter watching does not provide much shade!Â
The 56th Annual North Beach Festival kicks off on Saturday as well.Â Free fun for dad in the city.Â With food vendors and music, discounted parking and shuttles, this festival is sure to be a favorite for everyone.Â There is face painting for the kids, artist booths, and live music.Â Bring a blanket and lunch and enjoy the surroundings, dancing outside in the sunshine with your dad is always a good way to start the Father’s Day weekend.
Last but not least, for the swarthy pirate in all of us,Â there is the Pirate Festival in Vallejo.Â From 10 until 6, Saturday and Sunday. The waterfront will be full of sea dogs and scallywags.Â Come in costume and be part of the fun.Â This festival is going for the world record for the mostÂ crew on a ship!Â Â There are plays for the kids to join, magicians to watchÂ and comedians to enjoy.Â Sword fights and cannons are guaranteed to make this a loud and memorable start to the weekend.
