On Thursday June 24th, the Committee to Benefit the Children (“CBC”) will be holding its 12th annual Caribbean Sunsplash fundraiser at Cavanaugh’s Riverdeck. The CBC is a 501(c)(3) volunteer-based charity dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and their families who are afflicted with cancer, leukemia and serious blood disorders. Established in 1980, the CBC has been serving patients and families in the Delaware Valley and beyond who are treated at the Hematology-Oncology Division of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. To date, the charity has raised more than $2.5 million for children in need, with all funds allocated to the much neglected psycho-social needs of patients, which are absolutely vital in the treatment of these devastating diseases.

Some examples of the types of non-medical expenses the charity provides for are meal vouchers, parking, snacks and toys while in treatment, family living expenses, health insurance, prosthetics (including wigs), child care, counseling, referral services and funeral expenses. Most of these costs are not covered by health insurance, and the CBC fills an integral void. Having learned about the charity through a Facebook account of a friend and CBC committee member, the charity also demonstrates the type of awareness that can be generated through social media, and how Facebook, MySpace and Twitter can be used as instruments for altruistic good. Please spread the word!

The Sunsplash fundraiser and silent auction is sure to be an amazing time for a great cause. Tickets are $40 in advance ($50 at the door) for a two-hour open bar, buffet style dinner, and free t-shirt. Advance tickets can be purchased at www.cbckids.org.
