“Eat, Drink and Be Merry” at Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach

1
Famous paintings are recreated every night from July 7 through August 31 in Laguna Beach, California

Laguna Beach is famous for more than just a creatively named reality TV show. It has long been the artsy hub for Orange County and beyond, drawing tourists, artists and anyone who loved beauty, culture and a healthy tan to its quirky streets, hidden beaches and small galleries. Since 1932, the spirit of great art has literally come to life in Laguna Beach, California, during a two-month-long (July 7-August 31) festival known as Pageant of the Masters.

At Pageant of the Masters, hundreds of volunteers create sets and endure hours of make-up in order to “become” famous paintings. Local Laguna Beachians are literally transformed into the Statue of Liberty, or the man leaning against a cream pitcher in the painting above.  Incredible music and of course the dazzling surroundings of Southern California make this a night worth remembering, even for those of us who’s culture leans more towards giant turkey legs than ” Thanksgiving”.

Also, next week – July 18-21, 2010, the upper tier tickets are on SALE, buy one, get one, free! (Fellas, I’ll give you a piece of advice. She doesn’t have to know that you spent less on the ticket than you would on a case of beer. But it will be a hit, and you can even splurge for some cocktails at a trendy restaurant beforehand. Trust me. Art, culture… you have this brownie point made.)

This year’s theme for the Pageant of the Masters is: “Eat, Drink and Be Merry”.  A recent press release revealed that the theme was chosen because of contemporary troubles: “With economic uncertainty on everyone’s mind, the value and relevance of a theme that acknowledges humanity’s unique capacity for resilience was apparent. Pageant director Challis Davy stated: ‘In tough times, most of us could use some art entertainment that’s just for the fun of it.'”

Ain’t that the truth? Plus, with the discount tickets I just let you in on, that’s something to be merry about. You better get going though, because I might beat you to those budget tickets.
