Philadelphia will participate in its second naked bike ride. These events are held around the world to promote safety to cyclists and pedestrians. After all, drivers who typically ignore cyclists will find it hard to look away from naked cyclists. The progressive City of Brotherly Love is one of 70 cities unofficially participating in the organized worldwide event. Naked bike rides are organized by concerned citizens.

Specific details of the ride are not publicly promoted in advance. However, interested individuals can sign up for the e-mail list to receive more specific details. It has been publicly announced that Philly’s next World Naked Bike Ride will occur on September 5, 2010 at dusk.

As one sign from the World Naked group proclaims, the riders wish to “Stop indecent exposure – to vehicle emissions,” pointing out one of the reasons that cars are bad for our culture and environment.

Participants do not have to ride nude (or even partially nude), especially if they are worried about local laws or feel personally uncomfortable baring it all. Feel free to show up in a cycling-safe but zany outfit or a shirt supporting the environment.
