Maudie’s Tex-Mex, a local Austin favorite, will open its sixth location in August. This will be the first free-standing Maudie’s, as well as the first to be built entirely from the ground up, allowing for immense creativity in design and planning by architect Michael Hsu and owner, Joe Draker. Delivering stunning views of the hill county, the new location in the Shops at Galleria also promises to distinguish itself with expanded vegetarian and salad options that will hopefully soon make their way to the other Maudie’s around the city. Additionally, Maudie’s has paired with another famed local institution, Amy’s Ice Cream, to create a “signature flavor” called Bee Caves Crunch, which is a Mexican-inspired blend of vanilla and cinnamon, swirled with honey and praline pecans. [Yes, it is as good as it sounds.] Maudie’s Hill Country also offers a private dining room, available for booking parties, corporate meetings, or personal celebrations.

Perhaps most intriguing is the upstairs bar and dining room, which Draker says will have mostly off-menu items and smaller plates. Clearly attempting to create an aura of exclusivity and a posh, downtown atmosphere, dining (or simply imbibing) in this upper level might add a level of swank to the family-friendly Maudie’s experience.
Draker anticipates an opening date for the third week in August.
