The Jesus Lizard’s David Yow Debuts Solo Art Show At DIY Gallery
Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid frontman David Yow makes his art exhibition debut Saturday, August 14 with “SOLO: the first ever one-man exhibition of paintings, collage and digital drawings by David Yow” running through September 11 at DIY Gallery in Echo Park, Calif.
Yow will be on hand for the opening reception, an evening featuring music and drinks,  7 to 11 pm. The works on display are based on Yow’s personal and psychological history. The wide array of mediums used include acrylic, pencil, charcoal, crayon, hair, bugs, collage, and tar on wood, to line drawings digitally combined with photographic textures.
In addition to original works for sale, DIY is offering signed prints of Yow’s poster for an August 2010 Queens of the Stone Age / Eagles of Death Metal fundraising concert for bassist Brian O’Connor, Â recently diagnosed with cancer. Â All proceeds from poster sales will go directly to O’Connor’s medical fund.
The son of a fighter pilot, Yow lived around the world with his family, eventually settling in Austin, Texas. He attended Southwest Texas State University pusuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, encouraged by mentor, friend, and teacher, Mark Todd, as well being influenced by contemporary giants such as Hockney and Rauschenberg.  Punk on the rise pulled him sideways from art in 1982, becoming the singer for the punk band, Scratch Acid, and then fronting The Jesus Lizard. He continued to design album covers and products related to his bands.  In the ‘90s, Yow launched a career as a photo-retoucher for print advertising and key art. In recent years, he’s once again turned to art as a central passion.
DIY Gallery is located at 1549 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90026. The gallery is open to the public Tues-Saturday 12 -6pm. All ages are welcome.
