The book tour is such a part of the publishing industry now that it’s almost impossible to imagine a book being released without one – but debut author James Kaelan has added a new twist to the concept.

On Saturday August 14 Kaelan will be coming to Seattle on the final leg of his Zero Emission Book Tour, a smart combination of the traditional publicity tour and a very modern green ethos. The tour is in support of Kaelan’s short story collection We’re Getting On, but what makes it unique is the manner in which Kaelan is traveling, spurning luxurious hotels and First Class seats in favor of a bicycle and a string of campgrounds and farms.

The tour began on July 2 in Los Angeles, and James Kaelan has spent the last month and a half cycling up the West Coast. This week he will be camping in Colama, WA, and the Mother Earth Farm in Puyallup, WA, before reaching Seattle on Saturday 14. The tour is then planned to finish with a stop in Vancouver, BC, on August 18.

James Kaelan has recently issued a challenge to TV show The Colbert Report, however – claiming that he won’t stop the bicycle book tour until Stephen Colbert books him onto the show. If Kaelan lives up to his challenge, he plans to cycle to New York after the Vancouver leg of the tour, to put pressure on the show’s producers to feature him in the studio. See his video announcement below for more details.

James Kaelan’s green credentials don’t stop with his promotional tour, either. First editions of We’re Getting On are published on 100% recycled materials – and the covers are made of ‘seed paper’, that will germinate into birch saplings when buried. Even the title story of the collection is a witty and engaging exploration of what it truly means to turn your back on modern civilization.

The Seattle Zero Emission Book Tour event will be held at 7pm on Saturday August 14, in the Third Place Books store in Ravenna. You can RSVP for the event via Facebook.
