The Home Movie Theater Experience
Yeah, sure, you can just pop a movie in the DVD player and settle on the couch in your ratty pajamas with a bowl of microwaved popcorn. Then again, you can give yourself an experience. You can have have friends over. You can have date night at home. You can treat yourself. You can save money. Tell me, which of these things isn’t good?
Have you invested in a nice big screen TV? Great speakers? Put them to use. While most of us can’t afford, or justify the expense, or have the room for a true home theater (WOW), we can still do things up right. Even if we only have a 20 something inch TV that’s seen better days. Ahem.
Pick the right movie for the mood you want to create. Netflix, redbox, video rental store, On Demand or home video library — doesn’t matter, you still want to plan in advance what you’ll see. Let anticipation build. Check out our movie reviews. We even have a list of Movies About Mars.
You need food. Even if you just dress up your popcorn with a little truffle oil or parmesan cheese, make it special. Try a cheese tray. Or plan a meal that complements a movie. Make meatloaf and watch Diner. Sushi with Seven Samurai. Eat the title of Fried Green Tomatoes. Eat chocolate with Chocolat. Make something as simple as spaghetti or a full Italian meal to go with The Godfather. You get the picture.
And speaking of The Godfather, check out our list of Movies to Watch While Drinking Wine. Don’t forget the beverages while watching your movie. We also have a list of Movies to Watch While Drinking Cocktails. James Bond and martinis are a natural.
Whatever else you do, heavily stress comfort. This is what sets home movie viewing apart from going to a theater. Dim the lights. Kick off your shoes. Lots of pillows. A Snuggie if you must. After all, this is your night.
