Attention fun-guys and girls: on September 11 and 12, 2010, the weekend after Labor Day, the Kennett Square Mushroom Festival returns to celebrate the coolest “vegetable” around. Mushroom lovers from around the globe converge on Kennett Square, “the Mushroom Capital of the World”, to engage in some serious food and family fun. Celebrity chefs and local restaurateurs set up shop around the festival to sate your every gastronomic want, serving mouth-watering soups and other mushroom dishes throughout the weekend. May I recommend the Mushroom Ice Cream? Â
The food, however, is just the tip of the toadstool, as kids and adults alike will love the live entertainment, mushroom farm tours and Growers’ Exhibit, where the wizardly secrets of mushroom cultivation are revealed. Distinct from both plants and animals, from which they diverged approximately one billion years ago, mushrooms are among the most diverse organisms around, and serve a variety of functions besides just tasting delicious in your shiitake salad or cream of mushroom soup.Â
The festival is absolutely free, though there is a small fee to park. Featured on the Food Network’s All American Festival show, the Mushroom Festival has been voted by Travelocity.com as one of the top 10 festivals in Pennsylvania, classifying it as a “Local Secret, Big Find.”
So who says that summer fun has to end after Labor Day? Come out to the Mushroom Capital of the World, and, (if you must), tell them that Toad told you to eat a cap or two!
