Martin Sheen And Sally Field May Join ‘Spider-Man’
The upcoming 3D Spider-Man reboot may have two new, big-name cast members. Yesterday Heat Vision reported that Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now, The West Wing, Charlie Sheen’s dad) is in final talks to play the patriarch of the Parker clan, Uncle Ben, and today Coming Soon reports that Sally Field (Smokey and the Bandit, Brothers and Sisters) has been offered the role of Aunt May.
In the Spider-Man universe, Uncle Ben and Aunt May are responsible for raising Peter Parker, who turns into Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Ben’s death at the hands of a criminal (it varies slightly among the various retellings of Spidey’s origin story, but he always dies) is what compels Peter to use his new-found powers for good instead of for selfish reasons. Ben is often credited with uttering the iconic phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility.†Aunt May serves as a grounding influence in Peter’s life, a nurturing force, and as a moral compass.
Accomplished actors, Sheen and Field would add a powerful new dynamic to the story. In addition to adding the prestige of their names, Sheen could be great as the stern, but loving, father figure, while Field is a perfect fit as the compassionate matron. They would join a cast that includes Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as Peter, Emma Stone (Easy A) as Gwen Stacey, his love interest, and Rhys Ifans (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1) as Dr. Curt Connors, aka The Lizard. Marc Webb is helming the production, which begins shooting in just over a month and is aiming for a 4th of July weekend 2012 release date.
