Five Reasons to Join the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

0

MCA La Jolla
San Diego has many museums that one can visit, with a large majority of them located in historic Balboa Park. The Stuart Collection on the campus of UCSD, The Museum of Making Music and the Museum of Contemporary Art are just three of the many located elsewhere in the community.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is a two-site venue to display artwork by artists that are still alive and continuing to work. The first venue is the La Jolla location located on Prospect Street. The site is one to behold with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The site is small and offers the viewer an opportunity to view the artwork from close up. Another benefit of the small environment is the ability to take in a full museum experience in an hour or so, rather than a day. The Downtown location is located at 1001 Kettner Boulevard.  This is yet another intimate space where one can experience artwork in a small setting.

So, why would one want to JOIN the museum rather than just pay admission fees each time you visit? Well, let’s consider the benefits of joining MCA.

1. Support the San Diego arts community

Joining the museum helps support the arts community in San Diego. Information about membership can be found on the museum website (http://www.mcasd.org/join/membership).  There are different levels of membership and different perks that come with each, from bringing a guest for free to special sneak peaks of exhibitions to opportunities to mingle with the artists.

2. Come and go as you please

Second, you feel free as a member to to come and go as you please. When you are not a member and you pay admission to see an exhibit, you feel obligated to stay and take in the exhibit fully in one stop. While MCA is a small environment and that can be done, there is a benefit of being able to continue to go back and encounter artwork you found interesting during the course of the exhibit’s run. Membership allows you the opportunity to see the artworks multiple times and gain an appreciation for the work, without paying admission fees each time.

3. Thursday Night Thing

Third, the opportunity to attend TNT, Thursday Night Thing. The Thursday Night thing is a an opportunity to mingle with members of the art community, listen to music, make art and view performances. Each TNT is geared toward the theme of the current exhibition. More information can be found at http://www.mcasd.org/programs/tnt.

4. Discounts

Fourth, membership includes discounts at the café, bookstore and on events held at the museum. Museum membership has its perks for children and teens as well. The Teen Arts Council and Family Events are opportunities to expose the youth to art and allow them to begin to cultivate an appreciation at a young age.

5. November is membership appreciation month

Fifth, November is membership appreciation month. Today November 14th is membership appreciation day. Join now and take part in the special activities today and all month.
