Jumping at the success of his former films Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Zathura, Jon Favreau has made himself into a hot commodity in Hollywood, releasing commercially viable films with intelligence. Lest anyone forget his infinitely quotable directorial debut Made which also starred longtime collaborator and friend Vince Vaughn, along with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and Faizon Love. Favreau is legit. With an acting career still going strong, Favs is doing it all – Directing, Producing, Acting, maybe even a little ballroom dancing when no one is looking.
Now comes Favreau’s genre bending Sci-Fi Western Cowboys & Aliens, starring Daniel Craig as a stranger with no memory who comes to town (one of the seven stories in existence). However, there is one difference, Craig’s character, known as Jake, has a strange device strapped to his wrist. When everything seems to be moving along all Western-like, aliens attack (like they do).
Featuring a huge cast that boasts not only Craig, but Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Paul Dano, Cowboys & Aliens makes me want a ‘Wait Mate’ from Tim & Eric so I can sleep through the next eight months until it is released.
Mark this alongside the Coen Brother’s release of True Grit (A sort of remake of the John Wayne film, but mainly of the novel) starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, we could be seeing the return of the big budget western in the Hollywood system. Dare to dream.
