New ‘Green Hornet’ Trailer Shows How Badass Kato Can Be

The new trailer for Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet has appeared on the internet. While much of what it shows you’ve already seen in earlier versions, appearing here in an expanded form, there is one important addition. This new trailer delivers much more Jay Chou (True Legend) kicking a whole lot of ass as Kato. While Chou is obviously no Bruce Lee – the original Kato from the 1960s The Green Hornet television series – from all appearances it looks like Chou will be a serviceable replacement when it comes to fighting crime.

Chou and Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) are really the only reasons that The Green Hornet still looks interesting. Seth Rogen fans will be happy, but it doesn’t look like he’s doing anything that you haven’t seen many times. Chou brings a dry sense of humor that compliments his martial arts skills, and Gondry has such a unique style and collection of visual tricks that it will be fun to see what he can do within the context of a superhero story. Okay, Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) is intriguing as the villain, but do people still want to see Cameron Diaz? She’s annoying and looks like a Muppet.

Here’s a synopsis of the story:

Britt Reid (Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles’ largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid’s shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt’s new secretary, Lenore Case (Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.

The Green Hornet buzzes into theaters January 14, 2011, in 3D. Here is the trailer via Yahoo.
