Celebrate The Holidays At The Grand Illusion With ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ And ‘Bad Santa’
The Grand Illusion Cinema, “Seattle’s oldest continuously running movie theaterâ€, nestled in a former dentist’s office in the University District, is a unique landmark in the city’s film community. And in keeping with that distinctive style, it offers a pair of traditional ways to celebrate the holidays through film.
Continuing a custom that commemorates it’s 40th year, the theater will show It’s A Wonderful Life. Starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, the film follows George Bailey (Stewart), whose suicidal tendencies on Christmas Eve cause his guardian angel to intervene, showing him how the town is better off because of him. The GI’s website says it better than I ever could:
The Grand Illusion Cinema has changed names, owners, and décor over the past 40 years, but one special thing has endured: an annual, holiday run of Frank Capra’s heartwarming masterpiece, It’s A Wonderful Life. This year, we’re proud to present the film in glorious 35mm for the 40th consecutive year!
The shows begin Friday December 10th and continue through Thursday December 30th.
It’s A Wonderful Life plays daily at 6:00pm and 8:30pm, with additional shows Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30pm.
After you’ve had your spirits lifted and had your faith in humanity restored by watching It’s A Wonderful Life, you can stick around and counter those feelings with another Grand Illusion holiday tradition: late night screenings of Bad Santa.
This is the sixth consecutive year that the theater has screened Terry Zwigoff’s irreverent, profane, and politically incorrect 2003 take on a Christmas movie. Billy Bob Thornton, at his sleazy, booze-swilling best, plays a con man who has a holiday ritual of his own—he gets a job as a department store Santa Claus in order to rob the place on Christmas Eve. Bad Santa is as offensive as it is entertaining.
Bad Santa plays Friday, December 17th and Saturday, December 18th at 11:00pm.
