Kmart is among the stores open on Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving 2010 is the year we apparently continue to breach the line between keeping the day a true holiday and one that will more and more just be another shopping day. Forget Black Friday, it’s now Black Thursday. Sears will open on Thanksgiving for the first time in its history, joining Walmart, Toys ‘R’ Us and others. The list of stores open on Thanksgiving is just going to keep getting longer.

“Thanksgiving is not as sanctified a day as it was even a few years ago,” author Thomas Hine told USA Today.

Here are some of the stores that will be open on Thanksgiving Day 2010:

Sears: 7 a.m. to Noon on Thanksgiving

Toys ‘R’ Us: 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving, the earliest in its history

Kmart: 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and will be open until 9 p.m.

Walmart Supercenter stores: Open 24 hours on Thanksgiving, with most regular Walmart stores opening midnight Thanksgiving night.

Gap Inc., Banana Republic and Old Navy: most locations opening around 8 a.m.

“Our customers appreciated the option of shopping on Thanksgiving Day,” said Gap spokeswoman Louise Callagy.

Stores are opening early this season since last year in part because they all hope to get a jump on sales at a time when the economy is so poor. The National Retail Federation forecasts that there will be a 2.3% rise in 2010 for a total holiday shopping price tag of $447 billion spent. The economy however had not fully recovered and we might still see most Americans trying to shop only for necessary items, so expect the store with the best deals to be the most crowded.
