Denver is the place to be in December with so many events and activities to do against the backdrop of the snowcapped Rocky Mountains.  Whether you love to shop, enjoy holiday activities, winter sports, a good Christmas play or fireworks on New Year’s Eve, this list will give you the information you need to enjoy Denver in December.


16th Street Mall   The 16th Street Mall is Denver’s hub of shopping that stretches for 16 blocks. Locals and visitors alike enjoy strolling down the outdoor mall under the holiday lights.  Street performers add to the holiday atmosphere.

Larimer Square  Check out the the amazing windows decorated for the LoDo District’s annual holiday window contest as you shop at Larimer Square. Santa will be available for visits every Saturday and every Sunday in December through Christmas Eve.

Cherry Creek Shopping Center – Ice Palace  Combine holiday shopping with a sneak peek into the wondrous land of Narnia including scenes from the movie, a light show and snow at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.  A magical experience!

Pearl Street Mall   The Pearl Street Mall is a four block stretch with over 100 shops. Its quaint charm with brick pathways, street performers, and environmentally friendly LED lighted trees will delight this holiday season.

23rd Annual Holiday Exhibit December 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010

Join the Artists on Santa Fe Gallery for the celebration of their Gallery’s 23rd Annual Holiday Show.  They have a wide variety of original artwork including: functional and sculptural ceramics, paintings, photography, kaleidoscopes and jewelry. Enjoy a tour of the Gallery and visit with artists working onsite.

Parade of Lights  Fri., Dec. 3 at 8 PM and Sat., Dec. 4 at 6 PM  

The Parade of Lights starts at the Denver City & County Building at 14th & Bannock Street, and continues for two miles through the streets of Downtown Denver.  Listen to local marching bands, admire the parade balloons & lighted floats, and be entertained by costumed characters & performers. 

Denver Christmas Lights  December – January 2, 2011

There are three different opportunities to be dazzled by amazing Christmas lights throughout the 2010 holiday season.  Some of Denver’s best light displays are Zoo Lights, Blossom of Lights, and Trail of Lights.

Carriage Rides Downtown Denver  Nov. 26th – January 23rd

Enjoy Denver’s holiday lights on a horse-drawn carriage.  It is a unique experience that can both be romantic for couples and entertaining for families or a group of friends.  Starting Nov. 26 through January 23rd, carriage rides will be available to take you on a tour of Denver’s downtown lights.

The Nutcracker  November 27, 2010 – December 26, 2010

What is Christmas without The Nutcracker? The Colorado Ballet presents this holiday favorite featuring a live orchestra, dazzling costumes and magical scenery. This performance gets everyone in the holiday spirit year after year.

A Christmas Carol  November 26, 2010 – December 24, 2010

The Denver Center Theatre Company presents the classic A Christmas Carol.  This is the timeless story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the three ghosts of past, present and future, and the true meaning of Christmas. With original songs, captivating sets and lavish costumes, everyone is sure to be entertained and inspired this holiday season.

Trans Siberian Orchestra  Wed., Dec. 22 at 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM and Thurs., Dec. 23 at 4:00PM and 8:00 PM

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is known for its progressive rock sound.  Their music will definitely get you in the Christmas Spirit, but you will also be amazed at the the laser show, light displays and other special effects.

Winter Sports

Family Friendly Ski Resorts  

What is winter in Colorado without a little skiing? Families flock to resorts that are affordable and less crowded.  These resorts also that have excellent programs that effectively teach how to ski and/or snowboard at reasonable prices.

Outdoor Ice Skating – November through January (some rinks go later)

New Year's Eve in Denver

New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve Fireworks 9 PM and Midnight Dec.31st

Welcome in the New Year in Downtown Denver.  The New Year’s Eve Fireworks Downtown will once again dazzle the skies twice during the evening. The first show at 9:00 PM will entertain families and others looking for an early celebration.  The second show will officially mark the start of New Year 2011 at 12:00 AM.
