Profiles Changing to Cartoon Characters

Are you curious why so many people on your Friend’s List have changed their profile to a cartoon character?  The latest viral Facebook meme (a cultural idea or value that is passed from one person to another) has people doing just that.  There are several different versions of the message, but the current one is:

Change your facebook profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until Monday, Dec 6th of 2010, there should be no human faces on facebook, but an invasion of memories! This is for a campaign against violence on children.

The original message was in Greek and translates to read: “From the 16th to the 20th of November, we shall change our profile pictures to our favourite cartoon characters. The purpose of this game is to remove all photos of human for a few days from Facebook.”

Since the original message, a greater cause has been added to the cartoon meme: a campaign against child abuse.  You can think of it more as child abuse awareness, as there is no charity or organization attached to this cause. A group on Facebook called Change your profile picture to a cartoon character campaign is currently “liked” by more than 33,916 people. To check out the group, click here.

A popular Facebook meme that made the news earlier this year asked women to post the color of their bras to increase awareness about breast cancer.

What do you think of these memes?  Do you participate and do you think they help the cause?
