Introducing

Chris Riffle, will be playing The Living Room in New York City on Dec. 9 at 8:00 p.m. Originally from Washington and now a Lower East Side transplant, Riffle will be settling into his new neighborhood to give us an hour of down-to-earth tunes. The venue will offer a perfect backdrop to the music of of Chris Riffle who is often compared to late greats Nick Drake, and Elliot Smith. Like his predecessors, Riffle’s pieces seem to mirror something complex below a soothing surface.

Accompanying him on stage will be cellist Julia Kent, vocalist Miranda Zickler, and multi-talented instrumentalist and producer of Riffle’s recent release, Jimi Zhivago. Riffle’s latest release is a sophomore effort titled  Introducing…, which was released earlier this year. Written and performed entirely by Riffle, the album features the previously mentioned guest musicians of Thursday evening’s performance.  Introducing… was recorded at The Maid’s Room in NY, a studio used by legendary heavyweights Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright, and Martha Wainwright. Mixing was done by Grammy winners Steve Rosenthal and Brian Thorn. Riffle will be performing songs from the album, and songs from his upcoming EP.

Riffle’s show at The Living Room comes off the heels of a summer tour that landscaped the majority of the West Coast.  In the past, Riffle has opened for high profile acts like Death Cab for Cutie, Mary Lou Lord and Dub Narcotic Sound System and is well known in the Bellingham, Wa. music scene.

A Washington state native, Riffle was exposed to songwriting by his musician father who raised Chris in a one room cabin in the mountains. Chris left mountain life and pursued college in Bellingham, Wa.  While in school, Riffle advanced his chops as a writer, and made a name for himself locally. He has headlined many Bellingham shows and  has been known to represent the gay straight alliance. Riffle has no qualms about including this subject matter in his works and  has been applauded by former MTV personality John Norris as someone who has no problem “honestly and matter-of-factly sings about guys. Norris points out that Riffle’s new work still continues to touch upon this subject matter but is  “… less in-your-face, considerably more nuanced and ever more compelling.”

Show’s admission is free, so there is no reason to pass up this opportunity and welcome the new kid on the block. Thursday night’s performance at The Living Room begins at 8PM.
