Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello Is A Smart Man
You may have known this already. I mean, the dude is Harvard-educated and shit. But further proving his genius, recently, Tom Morello — the guitarist known primarily for his work with Rage Against The Machine — said something I’ve been saying for years.
“Nirvana often gets credit for being the first ‘alternative’ band to break through, the band that changed music and led rock out of the hair metal wilderness of the ‘80s,” started Tom. “That’s just not true. It was Jane’s Addiction: inspiring, intelligent, furiously rocking and artistically deep.”
I could not agree more.
Jane’s Addiction made it possible for Nirvana to get signed by a major label…to get airplay consideration by MTV, and yes, that video getting played on MTV is what broke that fucking band. Jane’s Addiction broke the mold, and really carved a path for the whole alternative genre.
Tom said this June 1, while speaking at the induction of Jane’s into the Guitar Center RockWalk in Hollywood.
After Morello’s speech, Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell said, “That speech made me sound so damn good, I don’t need to look in the mirror ever again. Just play that over and over every morning.”
Jane’s Addiction will release its first studio album in eight years, The Great Escape Artist, in August. The first single from that effort can be heard here.
By the way, Tom Morello was also a male stripper when he was young. No shit.
