The lush, orchestral-like sound that defines Other Lives‘ latest effort admittedly made me doubtful that they’d be able to recreate the effect in a live show. After all, they’re extremely talented, but  comprised of only five members. However, as I stood in the front row of their performance at The Southern Cafe and Music Hall in Charlottesville, Virginia, I was swiftly shown how my uncertainty was wholly misguided. The band kicked off with a gorgeous rendition of “As I Lay My Head Down” and only gained momentum from there.

Each member is a true multi-instrumentalist, switching deftly between all musical families and back again, often within the course of a single song. The delicate sound of stringed instruments blended beautifully with brass and percussion. As a fellow musician, I found myself consumed with an awestruck bliss that continued long after the set was over. During each selection of the well-paced performance, the audience was attentive and respectful of the musical brilliance on stage, breaking into warm applause as each song finished.

Several times over the course of the night, I found myself questioning how such a gifted band could still be flying so far under the mainstream radar. Indeed, they are a relatively new band, having released their self titled debut in 2009. However, I suspect that they’re about to get huge, so that the next time they come to town, they’ll be playing in a much larger venue. Catch them across the country as they open for Radiohead on their current tour by attending one of the dates below (or at the very least, peruse the list and take note of how corporations and companies use concert venues as a marketing outlet!). If you prefer to get your necessary dosage of live music outdoors, make sure to check out the band when they perform at Coachella on April 13th and 20th.
