If you’re familiar with Sarah Jaffe already, prepare for a bit of a shock to the system. And I mean this in the best way possible. On her previous two releases, Suburban Nature and The Way Sound Leaves a Room,  the singer/songwriter stuck with a certain vibe. Her music on her two previous albums was folk at finest, with a dash of something reminiscent of The Black Keys. Her songs illuminate the listener with a sense of intimacy; you really feel as though Jaffe is singing to you personally. Armed with her acoustic guitar, she would guide you in soul searching and put you at ease. She fit the folk mold to a T, which may be part of the reason with her upcoming full length release, she’s flipping the tables on us.
The Body Wins provides audiences with a different version of Jaffe. Rather than being presented with just a sweet yet soulful voice and a guitar, we meet a singer with a new level of intensity to her voice using electronic-indie as back up. It’s a bit shocking, but in a good way. The sort of way that is more intriguing than her previous records. She clearly still has kept some of her music’s roots, but she’s branched out and expanded her sound. Her new release, due out April 24th, will be a great addition to the long list of albums out in 2012.
One thing is for certain, with her current tour she’ll be demonstrating her new material in a big way. Catch her at Showbox at the Market on March 10th, opening for Guthrie. Tickets are still available for $22.50 here. This is a woman who knows her way around a stage, and the show is one that you should most definitely add to your March concert calendar.
