This Tuesday will be a night of Balkan-inspired music at the Showbox at the Market. Seattle Klezmer band Orkestar Zirkonium will be performing alongside Palenke Soultribe as they open for Balkan Beat Box. Tickets are $20 + fees, and are available here.

Balkan Beat Box, the Brooklyn- sometimes Tel Aviv band is touring to support their latest release, Give. It’s their fifth release since their self-titled 2005 debut. If you aren’t familiar with their work, BBB is as much Klezmer as Dancehall. They are influenced by traditional music and modern beats, with a major debt to Jamican Dub. This latest record has the trio playing with vintage synths and children’s toys. With BBB, experimentation is the law of the land. Their music is playful, and it’ll make you dance.

(Between you and me, I’d go just to see Orkerstar Zirkonium play at the Showbox. They are one of Seattle’s best excuses to dance.) But having them be the start of the night shows how much excitement and dancing is in store for the rest of the show. There is something fundamentally correct about the combination of eastern European folk music and electronica. It’s been going on for years, but it hasn’t really gone mainstream yet. Now is the time to see this show. A little dance on a wintery Tuesday is just the thing.
