CultureMob Giveaway: Win HAPPY FEET 2 on Blu-ray
Courtesy of the good folks at Warner Home Entertainment, CultureMob is offering a special giveaway for Happy Feet 2 on Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet Digital Copy combo pack. For more on this sequel to George Miller’s Academy Award-winning animated smash Happy Feet (which won Best Animated Film in 2007), I’ll turn to Warner’s official synopsis.
The sequel to the Academy Award®-winning animated smash hit, “Happy Feet 2″ returns audiences to the magnificent landscape of Antarctica, reuniting us with the world’s most famous tap-dancing penguin, Mumble (Elijah Wood), the love of his life, Gloria (Alecia “Pink” Moore) and their old friends Ramon and Lovelace (Robin Williams). Mumble and Gloria now have a son of their own, Erik (EG Daily), who is struggling to find his own particular talents in the Emperor Penguin world. But new dangers are threatening the penguin nation, and it’s going to take everyone working–and dancing–together to save them.
I loved the original film’s freewheeling mix of florid showmanship and earnest environmentalist tract, yet Part 2 slightly disappointed me. Â The good: the animation, which is as expressive and fluid as ever; the relentless pace (Happy Feet 2 wants to entertain, logic and coherence be dammed); the voice acting, which remains a star-studded treat (Brad Pitt and Matt Damon are particularly inspired as a pair of heroic krill). Â The not-so-good: the film suffers from a strong case of sequelitis. Â For all the activity on display, Happy Feet 2 just doesn’t have a whole lot that’s new to say (or sing, I guess), and it’s far too content to rehash beats from the first picture. Â It’s the now-common movie malady: bigger, wilder, and utterly familiar.
Still, Happy Feet 2 isn’t offensive and it isn’t stupid, and in these days of insufferable “squeakquels,” animation fans could do much worse. Â The Blu-ray itself is a real treat, sporting a luscious digital transfer and a full-throated 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track as well as a number of bonus supplements, including a Second Screen movie feature, four behind-the-scenes featurettes, musical sing-a-longs, and (best of all) a wonderful new Looney Tunes short.
