The Whiskey Diaries: South By Southwest And Back, Part 4
Tiger Flowers frontman Jesse James Madre is having a blast in Austin with the homeless hotspot dudes and everyone else at SXSW. Read on…
There’s something about the South that speaks to my bones. Maybe it’s the last residuals of the native blood running through my veins. Maybe it’s because my mother named me Jesse James. Maybe we’re not supposed to know, we’re just supposed to answer it when it calls. Listen when it speaks. Take what we can from it and move on.
Down here, things move a little slower. You have to slow down your tongue. There’s no rush down here and if you’re in one, you’re just gonna be aggravated so you might as well take a breath and relax.
Everything will be there. Just enjoy the ride. This is the road, and it’s landed us in the heart of Texas for the SXSW festival in Austin.
We pulled into town Wednesday afternoon, a day before our shows started, and took the time to catch some bands and grab some drinks.
If you’ve never been down here for this, which we hadn’t, it is overwhelming. Bands everywhere. I mean everywhere. A million official SXSW shows surrounded by two million unofficial shows. We’re here as part of the unofficial crowd. No credentials. No fucks given.
Wednesday night, we caught the Metal Injection/Metal Sucks showcase with High on Fire and Intronaut. Holy Grail and Nachtysium. Looking around the crowd, you could’ve been anywhere. Beards and tattoos and it’s all the same.
A closer look and you realize, it really is the same. As the days went on, we found that all the shows we were going to were the shows our New York City friends put on. Even out here, New York City runs it.
We meet up with my friend Tati who has been gracious enough to house all us dudes for the time we’re out here and head to her place. Tomorrow, the shows start and we have two a day from here on out. This night will prove to be the only rest we see and I’m too busy in my head to catch much of it.
