This was fucking sad ass news to awake to this morning. And how did I find out? Fucking Facebook. Brian Slagel’s status alerted me to the fact that Armand Crump, Slayer guitarist Kerry King’s guitar tech, is dead.
Crump died on Saturday. The cause of his death is not yet known.
“This is terrible, Armand was such a great guy. We are saddened by the tragic loss,” wrote Brian. “A true metal head. Your spirit lives on! RIP Armand.”
Meanwhile, the rest of my feed was filled with remembrances.
“The world lost a beautiful person today,” writes Lamb of God’s Mark Morton. “Godspeed Armand Crump. I love you dude.”
“Slayer and the metal road crew community is mourning the loss of a hard worker and dear friend Armand Butts Crump III,” writes Dave Lombardo online. “He was the best, he had to be to work for Kerry King. I’m going to miss him fucking with me from stage left. I still can’t believe it. We are deeply saddened. RIP ABCIII.”
“It’s times like these when I realize how much I take for granted how lucky and blessed I am to have my health and the love of family and friends,” wrote Phil Demmel of Machine Head. “My thoughts and prayers go out to Armand’s family. The world is a darker place without you my friend, you will be sorely missed.”
“So sad to hear about Armand Crump passing away,” writes Brian Fair of Shadows Fall. “Was a great friend for years. Teched for Amen on one of the 1st ever Shad tours. RIP brother.”
“The world lost a really awesome guy RIP Armand Crump,” writes Hatebreed’s Chris Beattie.
“RIP Armand… always treated us like family,” writes Chimaira’s Mark Hunter.
And finally, Fear Factory’s Dino Cazares writes: “My heart goes out to the Crump Family and his long time girlfriend Cassandra. RIP Armand — save me some tacos in heaven.”
This blows. Our thoughts are with the Crumps, Slayer, and all of these musicians who are hurting today.
