American Idol Top 7 Actually Sing Songs From The Past 2 Years!

I’m shocked. American Idol is known for blowing the dust off the song books and making the contestants choose songs that are super outdated and irrelevant to the music world today. For example, if I hear a Journey, Elton John or a Heart song one more time…. I’m going to write a nasty letter to producer Nigel Lythgoe.

Hip Hop artist, Akon, was the guest mentor this week, which brought in the irrelevancy that Idol likes to have since they let the contestants sing contemporary songs. I see your game Idol!

Gun slinging, Skylar Laine, was at the top of the show with a country song of course. Do you think she’s sad Rick Santorum dropped out of the presidential race? Anyway, she sang Kellie Pickler’s “Didn’t Know How Much I Loved You” and I didn’t realize how much I like Skylar. I’m not a huge country fan, but this girl knows where her voice fits. She started the song off by strumming on a guitar (looks classier than a rifle in my opinion) and she twanged her way through the country pop song. It was good. It should keep her around for another week, and even though she was first… I remember people later in the show being worse, so she has that going for her.

Colton Dixon and his urine colored head hit the stage next and he brought it emo style. He sang “Love The Way You Lie”, but not the Eminem and Rihanna domestic violence version. Colton sang the angsty, emo Skylar Grey version. Either way… when I’m wishing Rihanna was on stage butchering a song, you know it’s bad. Colton is just so ridiculous to me (and not to mention he dissed my boo, Phillip Phillips! WHAT?!?). Colton is good, but he just needs to sing songs that get placed in a CW teen drama for the rest of his life and not bother me with them. And because of that, Colton will definitely be around next week because as Jimmy Iovine says, the ladies little girls (and Jesus) love him.

Robot, Jessica Sanchez, came up next and she put BB Chez back in the closet this week to sing another boring ballad.  Jazmine Sullivan’s “Stuttering” was the Ambien of choice this week. I said it before and I’ll say it again… she’s has a great voice (minus her singing Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” during the trio performance. That was just bad), but she left her personality in prep school because there is nothing there on stage. But who cares what I say? The judges want to adopt her, so she’ll stick around.

I hope Bruno Mars wasn’t watching Idol because Joshua Ledet sang “Runaway Baby” and it just lacked everything that Bruno Mars gives it. Bruno Mars has sex appeal and is super charismatic onstage. Joshua Ledet?? Well, he’s not. It was a little manic too me and his dancing is worse than my sober dancing (my drunk dancing is where it’s at). But he had a nice jacket. Joshy might be in the bottom 3 because I hear Bruno Mars’ Hooligans didn’t dig this performance (okay… I just polled myself on that one). Let’s just hope he got the phone number of that dancer that the judges were trying to hook him up with.

Hollie Cavanaugh, who isn’t even American (how did she get on this show?) wore some faux ostrich feathers and sang Pink’s “Perfect” which was a big mistake. While I like her better than robot BB Chez, she let everyone run with the whole “well, that wasn’t exactly “perfect”, but…..”. The Judges always think they are funny when they can use the title of the song within their critique. I think Hollie may get the boot. She’s been tinkering on the edge for weeks now, and it’s probably her time.

My boo, Phillip Phillips dished out a little Maroon 5 next and Adam Levine is dead to me now. “Give A Little More” had a saxophone AND Phillip Squared’s growling voice?? SIGN ME UP! Plus, P^2 wore grey on grey on black and told Jimmy Iovine and Colton Dixon’s pretty face to shut up. It was perfect. The Judges weren’t feeling it this week as much as they usually do, but lets not forget that Phillip Phillips is white, plays guitar, and is pretty much all the past 4 winners rolled into one. He wins.

Elise Testone closed the show with Lady Gaga’s “You and I” and she brought it home once again. Elise clearly has the strongest voice out of the girls and I just hope America hears that. She may not have youth (compared to the other girls) on her side, but she definitely has the pipes and she has a personality on stage (I’m talking to you Sanchez!). Plus… Jason Segel loves her! She already won in my book!
