“Joy of Fine Dining Guide” is Martial Foodie‘s in-depth reviews of very favorite restaurants around the DC area and the nation in order to help diners maximize their culinary experiences.

What makes it fine: Whether it is at a fancy white tablecloth restaurant of a 5-star chef or a famous an eatery known for burgers, the best burgers I have had (as of the time of this review) were at Chez Victor.

From Organic Highland Beef, veal, wild boar, to duck, Chez Victor prepares magical burgers utilizing top quality meats topped with a diverse selection of flavorful cheeses nestled in a lightly toasted and sturdy (yet soft) Kaiser roll paired with a refreshing salad or fries with a fun array of mayonnaises for dipping.  Then, wash it down with local Quebec brewer Boréale, fancy Mighty Leaf Teas, or coffee.

Cost: C$9.50-C$30.00 (pre-tax/tip/alcohol per person).

The Occasion: When you want a hearty and comforting food with a touch of elegance in merry surroundings, Chez Victor’s superlative burgers reigns supreme.

Recommended Dishes: Whether you decide by your favorite meat or cheese, there are many outstanding selections.  For the burger purist wanting a great beef burger, Le Classique (totally worth the C$1.75 extra for the Organic Highland Beef) or Le Portneuvien are tops!  The former comes with mozzarella or cream cheese, lettuce, pickle, tomato, mayo, and a strong mustard, while the latter comes with a featuring the Organic Highland Beef, lightly sharp Tilsit cheese (think Swiss), roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato, maple-rosemary mayo, and Meaux mustard.

For the more adventurous, dive into the Le Charlevoisien or Le Sanglier—both of which feature the wonderfully flavorful Migneron, Quebec’s signature artisan cheese.  The former is an exquisite veal burger with blueberry-onion confit, lettuce, mayo, and green mustard.  The sweet-tart notes from the blueberry, sharp Migneron (think Virginia Grayson cheese), and zingy green mustard provide a dynamite mix of flavors for the juicy, tender veal.  The latter burger featuring the Migneron comes with a delicately-flavored wild boar patty, Brandy-sautéed Portobello mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, maple-rosemary mayo, and strong mustard.  The boar presents a lighter base of flavor than the veal, which accentuates the Migernon’s amazing flavors along with the mushrooms.

In the mood for a lighter (poultry) alternative?  Go with the Le Canard aux Câpres et Tomates Séchées.  This burger features a duck patty made with capers and sun-dried tomatoes for an intriguing blend of savory, tart, and herby notes heightened with Swiss cheese, caramel balsamic, peppery arugula, tomato, mayo, and Meaux mustard.

For dessert, the Gâteau Choco-Banane provides the sweet and homey finish to the hearty gourmet experience.  Think three moist banana bread slices with milk chocolate-hazelnut ganache layers between and a thin dark chocolate crunch at the very bottom.  Drizzled with dark chocolate and maple syrup plus a cerises de terre (cape gooseberry—looks like a tiny yellow cherry tomato in a tomatillo husk with the inside resembling a fig) for garnish, this large slice of banana-nutty goodness is a generous enough portion for two!

What to Avoid: Nothing major to note.

Special Tips: Their weekday lunch special (11am to 2pm) is a great deal—C$1.00-C$1.50 less than dinner price for a given burger and fries but also includes a beverage (coffee, tea, or soda).  If you want a lighter meal, definitely add the C$1.50 for the green salad.
