Artist Spotlight: You Are Plural
One of the best things about the Pacific Northwest is the plethora of musicians just waiting to be discovered. Tuesday I attended the Round 85 at The Fremont Abbey and was blessed by the presence of Olympia’s own You Are Plural. This indie rock trio is made up of Jen Grady on cello, Ephriam Nagler on Wurlitzer, and Chad Austinson on drums.
This is the first time I have ever seen someone playing an uncovered keyboard. The crowd was able to see the guts of the machine and witness the chain reaction that accompanied every motion of Ephriam’s fingers. The five year old inside of me was on cloud nine.
Their music combines the sophistication of classical music with the grit and forcefulness of indie rock to perfection. The duo of Grady and Nagler understands the dynamics of music better than most; when the vocals are coming on heavy the instruments back off and support the melody, and when the instruments are rolling the vocals complement the rhythm nearly flawlessly. Jen and Ephriam have voices that were made to harmonize together with Jen’s more full and driving style while Ephriam’s voice is light and airy. The result is grand tunes that transport you into a dream world that will have your imagination in overdrive. This is the perfect music to sit back with a cold beverage and relax with after a long week, or if you prefer you can dance the night away as you get lost in the ambiance.
The group is currently recording their next full length album which is due out later this year. In the meantime they are getting their music in front of as many people as possible.
